Provide Scholarships for Students in Need

The Appalachian Reading Center, Inc. offers partial scholarships to enrolled students who demonstrate both financial and academic need.  

 

Funding for partial scholarships comes from many sources including private donors, The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, The WV Development Office (Neighborhood Investment Program) and The CC Dickinson Family Giving Circle.

Your tax-deductible gift to The Appalachian Reading Center, Inc. provides scholarships to students in need. Neighborhood Investment Program (NIP) tax credits are also available for qualifying donations.

Join the Kroger Community Rewards Program

Kroger customers who register their Kroger Plus Cards in the Kroger Community Rewards  program can direct a portion of Kroger's charitable giving to a non-profit of their choice.

 

Please consider designating The Appalachian Reading Center, Inc. as your preferred charity if you shop at Kroger. The Reading Center will receive a percentage of your purchase amount each time your Kroger Plus card is scanned, but it will NOT cost you anything--the donation comes from Kroger.

The Appalachian Reading Center, Inc. accepts applications on an on-going basis for part-time tutors.  We are looking for friendly people with a background in education.  We provide extensive training and support to our tutors.  Please call us at 304/744-8188 if you are interested in applying for a part-time position or submit the online application below.

 

​Job Description

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate area of study.

  • Knowledge of Orton-Gillingham approach is essential.

  • Complete Appalachian Reading Center pre-service training program and participate in ongoing professional development activities. 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Tutor children and/or adults with language-based reading problems (e.g., dyslexia, etc.) by following the instructor manual and carrying out systematic instructions.

  • Prepare and execute engaging, individualized lesson plans at appropriate student levels.

  • Maintain excellent student progress records and complete periodic reports.

  • Demonstrate professionalism in interactions with fellow staff, students, parents, and administrators.
